Morg Armeni: Renaissance Now

Morg Armeni is an Italian painter whose work moves between classical influence and contemporary pop surrealism. Born in Genoa, she describes her origins as a mix of Emilia Romagna, Sicily, Calabria and Germany. Morg Armeni is also her legal name, chosen at eighteen to replace the one given at birth, driven by a strong need for personal identity.

Morg began drawing and painting at an early age and graduated from the Paul Klee Art High School in Genoa. She continued her studies at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa and later took part in an Erasmus program in the Netherlands, where she studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen.

During this period, she was already working as a tattoo artist, a practice she had started three years earlier. Tattooing became a central part of her work, adding a contemporary layer to a visual language rooted in classical art, later influenced by pop surrealism and, more recently, Flemish painting traditions. Her oil painting technique is largely self-taught, developed independently after minimal formal instruction.

Her first important group exhibition took place in 2005 at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome. Since then, she has participated in numerous group shows and organized three solo exhibitions. Having shown internationally, including in Los Angeles, Taiwan and Rome, she first exhibited in Ireland last year with two works as part of the Sherotica exhibition.

Her fourth solo exhibition, titled Renaissance Now, will open in Dublin at GalleryX on 16 April and run until 2 May. The exhibition presents her most recent body of work, bringing together painting, drawing and visual research developed over recent years.

Her visionary paintings reference the traditions of European art, from the Gothic to the Baroque. Executed with remarkable technical skill, they evoke a mythology of womanhood with deep and mysterious roots. The works on show reflect the evolution of her artistic language over the past fifteen years, gradually moving away from the strong influence of international pop surrealism present in her earlier works toward a visual language that draws on Northern European Gothic, the surreal imagination of Hieronymus Bosch, the Baroque fascination with the human body, and elements of Eastern mysticism. These are not works that reveal themselves at a glance, but rather invite prolonged and intimate observation.

Her professional path has developed between tattooing and painting, shaped by travel, conventions and the management of her own studio in Genoa for nine years. As her tattoo career grew, she worked internationally while continuing to develop her personal artistic research. Over time, the need to return to a more consistent painting practice led her to make significant life changes. Her work remains connected to nature, the planet and spirituality, with art seen as a form of transformation where image and meaning constantly shift.

Pinocchio Magazine comment: Morg’s journey shows a clear focus on identity, built through experience and constant change. Her works feel direct and personal, shaped by instinct as much as by practice. There is a sense of continuity in the way she moves between different forms without losing coherence.
