Speker: when the mural is a portal

Lorenzo Fontanella, known as Speker, is an Italian artist born in 2002 and currently based in Pavia, Italy. He grew up between Pavia and Milan, where the city’s vibrant graffiti scene had a strong influence on his artistic path. At 12, he began painting graffiti, attracted by its rebellious nature and the freedom of expressing himself in public spaces. Spray paint and urban landscapes became his first tools and his first canvas.

After studying industrial mechanics in high school, Speker decided to pursue his passion for art more seriously. His skills and vision developed further through his studies at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he earned a BFA in Illustration. Along the way, he expanded his practice beyond spray paint, working with acrylics, oils and digital illustration.

Today, Speker specializes in large scale murals, combining realism with graphic abstraction. Portraits and the human figure are recurring subjects, often created with high contrast and meticulous attention to detail. His work explores identity, multiculturalism, connection, and the emotional and psychological layers of the human experience.

His journey from graffiti to mural painting developed further in Los Angeles, where he began working professionally and moved towards figurative art. Portraiture became a way to investigate identity, emotion and the subtle tensions beneath everyday moments. Each work starts with an idea, story, concept or metaphor, which Speker develops through sketches, visual research and staged photographic references. People he knows and models often become part of this process, helping him construct scenes that feel realistic while remaining slightly displaced from everyday reality.

For Speker, the creative process is also a form of discovery. Ideas that may initially have little to do with his own life gradually connect with personal experiences, allowing the work to reveal something about himself along the way.

Speker’s international work has taken him across Europe, the United States and South America. In Ireland, he created Ripples in Waterford in 2026 for the 12th edition of the Waterford Walls Festival. Painted on the gable of a building on Ballytruckle Road, the mural depicts a reclining woman holding a small floral mirror above her face, with the composition following the slope of the roof. The work reflects Speker’s ability to combine a realistic human figure with a more intimate and symbolic visual language.

Speker has created murals and participated in street art festivals across Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Kosovo, the United States and South America, working with festivals, cultural organisations and nonprofit initiatives. His strength lies in translating detailed images onto large surfaces with spray paint, combining speed, precision and a strong sense of scale.

Speker’s murals are big and impressive, yet also intimate and personal. His current and fresh style seems to reinterpret classics from the past, creating works that feel outside time, timeless. His pieces offer a double reading. On one level, their scale and vivid, intense colours immediately make an impact. On another, they open a door into an intimate world where everything becomes a metaphor for itself. The result is a meditative experience, inviting the viewer to get lost in the carefully painted details, created with remarkable attention, elegance and sensitivity, and to discover both the message within the work and fragments of themselves.
