PH Andrea Macchia
Gennaro Andrea Lauro was born in England and grew up in Italy. After studying Philosophy and Eastern Languages, he worked at a refugee center in Rome and began translating for publishers like Adelphi, Fazi, and Passigli. Around the same time, he approached dance and theatre, joining companies like Sosta Palmizi — of which he is now an associate artist — and Atacama. In Rome, he co-founded the theatre group Caravan.
Since 2015, Lauro has performed in major productions by Romeo Castellucci, including Moses und Aron (Opéra de Paris, Teatro Real Madrid) and Tannhäuser (Bayerische Staatsoper, NHK Tokyo). He danced with Cindy Van Acker’s Swiss company Greffe, appeared in film projects by Arnold Pasquier and Jérôme Walter Gueguen, and collaborated on works by Cuenca/Lauro and Divisar. In 2019, he joined Flora Gaudin’s Compagnie Meta in Paris.
He has since worked across Europe: in Visseuse Électrique (Gaudin) and Liminal (Fabiana Ruiz Diaz), in Co-Creators by Tanz Station – Barmer Bahnhof (Germany), Bruit by Inkörper (Switzerland), elsewhere & elsewhen by Field Works (Norway), and Luz de Luna by Circo El Grito. In 2024, he performed in Specky Clark, Oona Doherty’s latest creation.
Since 2018, Lauro has been creating his own choreographic work. His first solo, Sarajevo – la strage dell’uomo tranquillo, was a finalist at Premio Equilibrio and selected for Anticorpi XL and Aerowaves. Mondo, his second piece, received support across France and Italy and was also selected for Aerowaves. His latest work, ZugZwang, co-created with his sister Elisabetta Lauro, premiered in 2023 and was selected for Resi Dance XL and the NID Platform 2024.
Currently, he’s developing a new project for 2025: To Repel Ghosts/Letter to the Father, a physical investigation into masculinity, created in dialogue with dancer and shepherd Silvia Mai.
In parallel, Lauro continues his work as a literary translator. His approach to choreography is shaped by language, thought, and a commitment to making sense of inner movement.

Pinocchio Magazine writes:
“For Gennaro, the body becomes word — an expression that takes on the shape of thoughts and emotions, giving form to an inner world that vibrates with unresolved tensions. These tensions fuel a vital drive for growth, evolving into self-awareness in the search for deeper, more authentic truths”.
