Cockles and Mussels – The uplifting power of the true soul of Dublin

“Cockles and Mussels” is a short movie shot in Dublin in 2016 by the Neapolitan director Bruno Barone.

It takes its inspiration from the legend of Molly Malone, an iconic character of Dublin, which in 1987 erected a statue to celebrate her memory.

Little is known about Molly, legend has it that she was native of the fishing village of Howth selling seafood during the day and prostituting at night. She died on June 13, 1699, torn by a fever leaving her ghost still walking lost in the old streets of the city.

The main character of ‘Cockles and Mussels’ is Mary, a modern prostitute.
After being humiliated by a client she wanders around the city until she ends up in an ancient and isolated street. At this stage the story takes a very evocative turn suggesting an encounter between the two women leaving the viewer suspended and uncertain if it is real or imaginary.

This meeting will give Mary a new awareness, a different vision of her life with all its opportunities and a new hope for a better future.

“Cockles and Mussels” premiered at “Milano Film Festival 2016”, it was short-listed for ICFF 2017 CANADA and won the award as the best short movie at CORTO, the short movie competition of the ITALIAN FUSION FESTIVAL 2020 in Dublin.
This was the review of the judging panel:
“Cockles and mussels depicts the healing and uplifting power of the true soul of Dublin represented by one of its most iconic characters. Far from the aesthetics of the international business European capital, the town is presented in its alleys where a marginalized member of society feels embraced by the city. This encounter between two women so different and yet so close will give the protagonist the hope and strength to move forward.

The narrative moves away from the most popular image of Dublin as a land of career opportunities and stays true to the most authentic character of the town down-to-earth, unassuming, welcoming and wise.”
